The 2018 Corian® Design Awards Winners

Recently announced–the Grand Prize Winners of the 2018 Corian® Design Awards for Outstanding Design:  Furling, designed by davisthomas; and Tweed Terrace House, designed by Raunik Design Group. Each year since 2006, CASF Australia, a national distributor of Corian® solid surface, provides the platform for the design awards that recognize local designers in their field of expertise for their creative use of Corian® solid surface.

Two winners are selected at the end of each quarter (March, June, September and December) from two categories, Residential and Commercial.  Then, the winner from each category is placed in the pool of candidates from the entire year. After that, the overall winners are selected from there.

The 2018 Corian® Design Awards Grand Prize Winners were chosen based on their exceptional ingenuity and astounding creativity, the type of talent for which the Australian design community is known.  The Award recognizes innovators of the uses for Corian® and their abilities to transform ideas into projects previously thought to be unachievable.

The Furling Project

The winner of the Commercial category is Furling. Furling is a large-scale sculpture designed by davisthomas, artists who specialize in sculptural, installation-based projects for public spaces.  Intertwining historical, current social, environmental and physical elements into their discovery process, the project was inspired by the nautical history of the wharf in the Brisbane river and Mary Street area.  Consequently, davisthomas chose Corian® solid surface in Venaro White as their material.  Corian® offered the creative opportunity davisthomas was seeking, coupled with its ability to move beyond everyday purpose, thereby making the sculpture robust and maintenance-free.

The Furling project was davisthomas’ first experience with Corian®.  In particular, they were impressed with its responsiveness and fluidity. Additionally, they were pleased with the ease of fixing, seaming and finishing the material.

From the Designer

“Corian® made this project possible. The flexibility of the material’s thermoforming capabilities combined with the near seamless bonding capability of the joint adhesive allowed us to produce 9m linear planks that flow and glide up the side of the wall. Creating a majestic, dynamic sculptural artwork with a high quality finish.”

– Lubi Thomas and Adrian Davis

From the Judges

“This is a highly skilled and innovative implementation of Corian® to create a striking sculptural element.”

– Alexander Lotersztain

The Tweed Terrace Project

The winner of the Residential category is Tweed Terrace, a luxury home at Duranbah on the Gold Coast. Originally, the idea was envisioned by Mexican architect Javier Senosiain, then subsequently brought to fruition by Raunik Design Group.  The organic design uses curves, thereby mimicking the ebb and flow of the sea, as opposed to angles–a sharp and complimentary contrast to the surrounding high-rises.

The smooth, curved design continues throughout the interior of the home, with custom finishes and a futuristic flare in woodworking craftsmanship. Careful color selections were made to suit the purposes of the rooms. Corian® Glacier White in matte finish was used for the bed surround. The vanity tops, with integrated basins, were done in Antarctica with a gloss finish.

From the Designer

“We wanted a product that looks like it flows with the curved walls and emerges from the wall. We wanted it to have its own form and dissipate in its own way.”

– Scott Bowden, Project Leader, Raunik Design Group

From the Judges

“Language of organic forms created by Corian® creates futuristic simplicity and fluidity throughout the entire house. Shows the versatility of the product.”

The Shift–From Old to Renewable with Corian® Solid Surface Exterior Wall Cladding

Fitting in isn’t always easy and poses a significant challenge when trying to literally strike a balance between historic buildings and new construction. Axel Schoenert Architectes (ASA) architectural studio has accomplished that using Corian® Exteriors solid surface customized panels in its renovation of the “Shift,” a Parisian office compound housing co-working spaces.

The project involved three buildings in the heart of the Saint-Lazare railway station district at 54 rue de Londres in Paris, France. The challenge of the undertaking was to transform three buildings from the 1930’s, the 1840’s and the 19th century to provide balanced symmetry and identity in the urban setting while at the same time providing sustainability.

Dynamic District Location

Ideally positioned in the heart of the dynamic district of the Saint-Lazare railway station, the office complex has been entirely restyled and renovated to make it modern, innovative and functional, while importantly respecting its urban environment and its history.

A Balanced Approach

ASA studio used a different approach for each of the three buildings that led to the creation of one new construction and a major renovation and restructuration of two historic buildings.

The main challenge was to give the spaces a balanced symmetry, that was fragmented due to a succession of different architectural and historical sequences, and to provide a strong overall identity, especially for the façade on rue de Londres.

By creating a sculpted 3D appearance, ASA studio wanted to add value and give new life to the imposing façade on rue de Londres. The idea was to use a geometric patterned cladding resembling an Origami, the Japanese art of folding paper.

Guide to Finding Corian® Glacier White and Other Solid White Solid Surface Material

Did you know that White is the most sought after color of the many hundreds of colors and patterns of solid surface? White is not only classic and aesthetically bright, it also provides a wonderful visual representation of solid surface’s naturally antiseptic nature.

While DuPont’s Corian® Glacier White is one of the more widely known and highly popular versions of white, there are also many other equally desirable white solid surface options available that may satisfy the needs of your project.  We thought it may be useful to put together this handy guide that presents the various white options available through SolidSurface.com:

DuPont Corian® Glacier White

Although Glacier White is not part of the standard stocked product offering at SolidSurface.com, it does frequently come into the overstock “full” and “partial sheet” inventory.  When items do become available, they frequently sell out fast. We suggest if you are interested in an item you either immediately grab it, or contact us to place a hold on it for you.

Select Grade Glacier White

The next best alternative to DuPont Corian® Glacier White is the Select Grade. Select Grade Glacier White is 100% acrylic solid surface made in the USA and matches the color of Corian® Glacier White. Select Grade is material that did not meet the manufacturer’s precise specifications and is made available under our overstock full and partial sheet inventory.  However, the majority of these ‘imperfections’ cannot be detected to an untrained eye, if even then. (Learn more about Select Grade.)

The primary benefits of Select Grade are that it is still a very high quality material offered at a considerably less expensive price.  Even more dramatic discounts are available when you purchase the material in 8-pack quantities or more, when available.  Both ½” & ¼” thick material are frequently listed in the overstock inventory.

Solid White Available From All Brands

Just about every brand of solid surface offers some type of solid white color.  There are many shades of solid white to choose from in a variety of different names, including Glacier White, Arctic White, Antique White, Alpine White, Bone or Ivory White and many more.  If you have a specific shade of white in mind for your project, its a good idea to locate physical samples for the options available.

SolidSurface.com offers an array of solid whites in both stocked full sheets and overstock full and partial sheets from many different brands including LG HI-MACS, Samsung Staron, Formica Solid Surface, Hanex and many more.  The best way to view what is available in both stocked and overstocked inventory is to visit the link below which displays a page that pre-filters the search options by “White” color family, “Solid” pattern, “Full Sheet” size and sorts by “Color Hue”.  All items listed are considered stocked (in-production and consistently available), unless the name contains “overstock” (limited availability).
